La Liga Tightens Up As El Clásico Approaches

If you thought the top of the Premier League was tight, it’s worth having a look over at Spain’s Primera Division where Real Madrid moved equal on points with Barcelona after an enthralling comeback against Sevilla Saturday night.

Rafael van der Vaart

It was time for the obligatory bundle after van der Vaart's late winner.

Only for yet another exceptional performance from Lionel Messi did Barcelona come away with a point against Almeria, struggling to a 2-2 draw after falling behind twice. An ingenious free kick from the Argentine star, an absurdly cheeky dink over the wall into the corner levelled things up after Barca fell behind early on. Things took a turn for the worse as the game progressed when Carlos Puyol scrambled the ball into his own net and Zlatan Ibrahimovic saw red. Messi’s second of the game rescued a point for the Catalan giants five minutes from time.

Sevilla went close to stamping out Real’s 100 percent home record, going 2-0 up within 55 minutes of the game. A scrappy goal from Cristiano Ronaldo sparked the comeback followed by a header from Sergio Ramos five minutes later to level things up. Substitute Rafael van der Vaart scrambled the ball over the line in stoppage time, setting of exuberant celebrations around the Bernabéu.

Barcelona and Real Madrid are both now tied on 62 points. The head to head rule which overrides goal difference in the Primera, makes next’s month’s El Clasico all the more facinating. If their current standing remains as it is, this will be the biggest meeting of Spain’s biggest two clubs in years.

11th April. Mark it down.
